Keep Your Eye on the Prize
Human nature is such that we need to be motivated to implement change. A lot of research into what motivates people shows that the greater the incentive and the more clearly perceived the benefit or reward, the more likely it is that one will take action. 3 Preventive health care runs counterintuitive to this because the benefits are in what you avoid rather than in what you receive. Of course you are receiving the absence of a health problem, and that should be reward enough. For most people, however, circumventing something’s going wrong is at best an ambiguous motivational tool, especially when things are going right. Let’s face it: When you are feeling good and aren’t in pain, it’s hard to believe that that can change in an instant. So how do you find the motivation to engage in the 3-Minute Maintenance Method daily? By keeping your eyes on the prize: Every day you’re free of pain is a gift.
Hundreds of millions of people globally are suffering from chronic musculoskeletal dysfunction. Look around and you will see evidence of this everywhere. Perhaps a co-worker’s back is out yet again. Perhaps a good friend can no longer engage in certain recreational activities because his or her knees, elbows, shins, ankles, or shoulders hurt. Perhaps you don’t need to look further than a mirror to see an assortment of aches and pains staring back at you. Need more evidence? There is a higher incidence of chronic pain in children under the age of 18 than ever before. 4 And as baby boomers approach senior citizen status, the statistics on chronic pain are expected to increase exponentially. 5 If thinking about what you don’t want your life to become will motivate you, it would be wise to keep these facts in mind.
The flip side is thinking about what you do want your life to become. Imagine it free of aches and pains. Imagine growing old gracefully without the onset of degenerative arthritis or restricted mobility. Imagine being active without injuring yourself. Imagine no back pain, headaches, or stiffness in your muscles and joints; a life lived without constantly going to the doctor, purchasing expensive ergonomic devices and equipment, undergoing invasive surgery, or taking drugs and herbal remedies to alleviate your pain. If positive reinforcement gives you additional incentive, it would be wise to keep these images in mind.
That you have picked up this book and read this far is an indication that you want to be free of pain and are motivated enough to do something about it. All you need to do now is devote a little time—and I do mean just a little—each day to maintaining the health of your precious muscles and joints. You have all the information and tools necessary. The rest is up to you. What you decide to do with three minutes a day can change your life.
